What is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is a common condition that affects the spine as we age. It’s a type of osteoarthritis that causes wear and tear on the vertebrae, the bones that make up your spine. As spondylosis progresses, it can lead to the growth of bone spurs and narrowing of the spaces in your spine.

This condition typically develops due to the natural aging process, but factors like repetitive stress, heavy lifting, or previous spinal injuries can increase your risk. While spondylosis can occur in any part of the spine, it’s most common in the neck (cervical spondylosis) and lower back (lumbar spondylosis).

Common symptoms of spondylosis include:

  • Neck or back pain
  • Stiffness in the affected area
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
  • Weakness in the extremities
  • Difficulty with balance or coordination

In some cases, spondylosis can lead to spinal stenosis, where the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This can cause more severe symptoms and impact daily activities.

While spondylosis is a natural part of aging, its effects can vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may experience little to no discomfort, while others might face significant pain and mobility issues. If you’re experiencing persistent back or neck pain, it’s important to consult with a spine specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment options.
